About the BTU Calculator
Sizing an air conditioner by square footage alone gets you in the right neighborhood, but ceiling height and sun exposure both push the true BTU requirement up from that baseline figure.
How It Works
The calculator multiplies room area by a BTU-per-square-foot figure, then applies percentage adjustments if the room has high ceilings or heavy sun exposure, before converting the result to equivalent AC tonnage.
Examples
A standard bedroom
A 300 sq ft room at 20 BTU per sq ft needs about 6,000 BTU with no adjustments, roughly a half-ton unit.
A sunny room with high ceilings
The same 300 sq ft room with both high ceilings and heavy sun exposure needs about 7,590 BTU, a meaningful jump from the baseline figure.

- Whole-house central systems involve ductwork losses and zone balancing that a simple per-room BTU estimate doesn't capture.
