About the Idling Fuel Waste
The Engine Idling Fuel Waste Calculator estimates how much fuel, money, and CO2 emissions accumulate over a year from leaving a vehicle's engine running while parked. It is useful for anyone who idles regularly while waiting in a car, warming up in winter, or running quick errands with the engine left on.
How It Works
You enter minutes idled per day, the vehicle's idle fuel consumption rate in gallons per hour, and the local gas price. The calculator converts daily idling minutes into annual idling hours, multiplies by the idle fuel rate to get gallons burned per year, then multiplies by gas price for annual cost and by an EPA emissions factor for annual CO2 output.
Formula & Methodology
Start by converting daily idling minutes to hours (divide by 60), then multiply by 365 to annualize. Multiply the resulting annual hours by the vehicle's idle fuel consumption rate, typically 0.2 to 0.5 gallons per hour for a passenger car, to get gallons wasted per year. Multiply gallons by the price per gallon for the annual dollar cost, and separately multiply gallons by 8.887, the EPA's standard CO2-per-gallon-of-gasoline factor, to get annual CO2 output in kilograms.

Idling 10 minutes a day at 0.3 gal/hr with gas at $3.50/gal gives annual hours of (10/60) x 365 = 60.8, annual gallons of 60.8 x 0.3 = 18.25, annual cost of about $64, and annual CO2 of 18.25 x 8.887, roughly 162 kg.
Cold-weather warm-up habit
Idling 20 minutes a day at 0.4 gal/hr with gas at $3.75/gal gives annual hours of (20/60) x 365 = 121.7, annual gallons of about 48.7, an annual cost near $183, and roughly 433 kg of CO2 for the year.
