About the Insulation Calculator
Fiberglass batt insulation is pre-cut to fit snugly between studs or joists at standard spacing, so the right batt size - and how many you need - depends on your framing's on-center spacing, not just the area alone.
How It Works
The calculator divides your area to insulate by the coverage of a single batt (which depends on whether your framing is 16" or 24" on-center), then adds your waste allowance.
Examples
A standard wall at 16" spacing
500 sq ft of wall area at 16" on-center framing needs about 57 batts, including a 10% waste allowance.
Same area at 24" spacing
The same 500 sq ft at 24" on-center needs fewer, larger batts - about 37 instead of 57 - since each batt covers more area.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- This estimates batt count for a given area regardless of R-value - R-value depends on which specific insulation product (thickness and material) you buy, not on this calculation.
- Odd framing bays, around outlets, plumbing, and wiring, typically need cutting and can't use full batts efficiently, which the waste allowance partially accounts for.
- Batts for 24" on-center framing are wider (23") than those for 16" on-center (15"), covering more area per batt despite the wider stud spacing.
