About the Kinematic Viscosity Converter
The Kinematic Viscosity Converter rescales a fluid's kinematic viscosity between square meters per second, stokes and centistokes, the units used across engine oil, hydraulic fluid and industrial lubricant specifications. It is built for anyone reading an oil grade like ISO VG 46 or a lubricant datasheet that lists viscosity in a different unit than the one they need.
How It Works
Enter a viscosity value and choose the unit it's currently expressed in along with the unit you want. The calculator converts your value to the base unit, square meters per second, using a fixed multiplier for the source unit, then divides by the multiplier for the target unit. A reference table also lists the same conversion applied to several common multiples (1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100) of your input unit.
Examples
ISO VG 46 engine oil (default)
A viscosity of 46 centistokes, the rating for ISO VG 46 oil, converts to 0.000046 m2/s, or equivalently 0.46 stokes.
A thicker industrial fluid
A fluid rated at 2 stokes converts to 200 centistokes (0.0002 m2/s), showing how far outside the typical engine-oil range a viscosity of a few stokes actually sits.

Common Mistakes
- Confusing kinematic viscosity, resistance to flow under gravity in stokes or m2/s, with dynamic viscosity, resistance to flow under applied force in poise or Pa-s, which are related but not interchangeable without knowing the fluid's density.
- Reading an oil grade number like 46 as centistokes without noting that the rating specifically applies at 40 degrees C, not at whatever temperature the fluid happens to be measured at.
- Overlooking the exact 100 to 1 relationship between stokes and centistokes and mis-shifting the decimal point during a manual conversion.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Only three units are offered, m2/s, St and cSt; older US-industry scales like Saybolt Universal Seconds aren't included, so a datasheet quoting SUS needs to be converted separately first.
- Kinematic viscosity changes with fluid temperature, and oil grades such as ISO VG 46 are specified at a reference temperature, commonly 40 degrees C; this calculator only rescales the unit of an already-known value and doesn't adjust for temperature.
- Kinematic and dynamic viscosity are different physical quantities (kinematic viscosity is dynamic viscosity divided by density), so converting between them isn't a simple unit swap and isn't what this calculator does.
