How It Works
You enter hours of use per day, your electricity rate, and the power draw in watts for both a desktop-plus-monitor setup and a laptop. The calculator converts each device's wattage to kilowatt-hours used per year based on daily hours, then multiplies by your electricity rate to get an annual cost for each, and reports the difference as the savings from using a laptop.
Formula & Methodology
For each device, divide its wattage by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts, multiply by hours used per day, then multiply by 365 to get annual kilowatt-hours consumed. Multiply that figure by your electricity rate in dollars per kWh to get the annual cost for that device. Subtract the laptop's annual cost from the desktop's annual cost to find the yearly savings from choosing the laptop.

At 6 hours a day, $0.16/kWh, 200W desktop and 40W laptop, desktop annual cost is (200/1000) x 6 x 365 x 0.16 = $70.08 and laptop annual cost is (40/1000) x 6 x 365 x 0.16 = $14.02, for an annual savings of about $56.06 using the laptop.
Heavy daily use, higher electricity rate
