How It Works
You enter the lawn area, how many inches of water it currently receives per week, and how many weeks per year it is watered. The calculator converts weekly watering into gallons using a standard area-to-gallons conversion factor, multiplies by the watering season length to get current annual water use, and applies a fixed 60% reduction rate to estimate the savings from switching to xeriscape landscaping.
Formula & Methodology
Multiply the lawn's square footage by the number of inches of water applied per week, then by 0.623, the standard conversion factor for gallons of water per square foot per inch of depth. That gives weekly gallons used. Multiply by the number of weeks in the watering season to get current annual water use. Multiply that annual figure by 0.6, the reduction rate this calculator applies for xeriscape conversion, to estimate the annual gallons saved.
