How It Works
You enter how many light strings you're running, how many hours per day they're lit, how many days the display stays up, and your electricity rate. The calculator applies a fixed wattage assumption for a standard 100-bulb mini-light string, 40W for incandescent and 4.8W for LED, multiplies each by your total lit hours to get seasonal kilowatt-hours, then converts both to dollars at your rate and reports the difference.
Formula & Methodology
With the default 10 strings running 6 hours a day for a 30-day display, total lit hours come to 180. Incandescent draw works out to 10 x 40W x 180h / 1000 = 72 kWh for the season, while LED draw is 10 x 4.8W x 180h / 1000 = 8.64 kWh. At $0.16/kWh that's $11.52 versus $1.38, a seasonal difference of about $10.14 for that display size.
