About the Low-Flow Showerhead Savings
This calculator estimates the water and cost savings from replacing your current showerhead with a lower-flow model, based on the gallons-per-minute difference, average shower length, and how many showers your household takes per week. It's aimed at anyone comparing a specific low-flow or WaterSense-certified showerhead against what they're currently using.
How It Works
You enter your current showerhead's flow rate and the flow rate of the replacement, your household's average shower length, how many showers are taken per week, and your combined water and sewer cost per 1,000 gallons. The calculator finds the gallons-per-minute reduction, multiplies it by shower length and weekly shower count to get gallons saved per week, scales that to a year, and converts the annual total to a dollar figure using your water rate.
Formula & Methodology
With the defaults, an 8-minute shower moves from 2.5 GPM to 1.5 GPM, a 1.0 GPM reduction. Across 14 household showers a week that's 1.0 x 8 x 14 = 112 gallons saved weekly, or 5,824 gallons a year. At $8 per 1,000 gallons, that comes to about $47 a year in water and sewer costs alone, before counting any water-heating energy savings.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- If the new showerhead's flow rate is set equal to or higher than the current one, GPM saved is floored at zero rather than going negative, so the calculator won't show savings from a change that isn't actually a reduction.
- This result covers water and sewer billing only; it does not calculate the separate energy savings from heating less water, though a hot-water household sees roughly the same percentage cut in water-heating energy use as the flow-rate reduction.
- Households on a flat water rate rather than metered billing won't see the dollar savings reflected on their actual bill even though the gallons-saved figure still applies to their consumption.
