How It Works
The calculator applies a percentage split (balanced, low-carb, or high-protein) to your total calorie target, then converts each macronutrient's calorie share into grams using their known caloric density - 4 calories per gram for protein and carbs, 9 calories per gram for fat.
Formula & Methodology
Each macronutrient has a fixed, well-established energy density measured in calories per gram - protein and carbohydrates both provide 4 calories per gram, while fat provides more than double that at 9 calories per gram (alcohol, not a macronutrient tracked here, provides 7). Splitting a calorie target by percentage and then dividing by each macro's specific caloric density is what converts an abstract percentage plan into concrete daily gram targets a person can actually track against food labels.
Step-by-Step: Calculating It By Hand

Examples
Balanced split

Low-carb split
The same 2,200 calories on a low-carb 25/30/45 split shifts significantly toward protein and away from carbs, at about 248g protein and 138g carbs.

- Extremely low-carb or low-fat splits can be difficult to sustain nutritionally and shouldn't be pursued without a specific reason and awareness of the trade-offs.
- This assumes calorie target is already correctly set - a macro split applied to an inaccurate calorie target just distributes the error proportionally across all three macros.
