About the Metabolic Age
The Metabolic Age Calculator translates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) into an age figure by comparing it against typical BMR values across the adult lifespan. Rather than reporting a raw calorie number that's hard to contextualize, it reframes your BMR as the age at which that BMR would be typical, a format popularized by fitness trackers and gym body composition scales.
How It Works
You enter your BMR in calories per day (calculated elsewhere, such as with a dedicated BMR calculator) and your sex. The tool starts from an assumed age-20 reference BMR, then works out how many years above or below 20 your BMR corresponds to, using a fixed rate of decline per year that differs for men and women. The result is bounded so it always falls between 20 and 80 years.

A man enters a BMR of 1600 kcal/day. Metabolic Age = 20 + (1800 - 1600) / 7 = 20 + 28.57, which rounds to about 49 years.
Woman with a higher BMR
A woman enters a BMR of 1500 kcal/day. Metabolic Age = 20 + (1450 - 1500) / 5.5 = 20 - 9.09 = 10.91, which the calculator clamps to its minimum output of 20 years, since her BMR already exceeds the age-20 reference used in the formula.
