How It Works
You enter the number of dogs and their average monthly food cost per dog, plus the number of cats and their average monthly food cost per cat. The calculator multiplies each species count by its respective per-pet monthly cost, adds the two subtotals together for a household monthly total, and multiplies that total by 12 to project the yearly cost.
Formula & Methodology
Calculate each species' monthly subtotal separately by multiplying the number of pets by the average monthly cost per pet for that species. Add the dog and cat subtotals to get the household's combined monthly food cost, then multiply that combined figure by 12 to get an annual projection, since the calculator uses a flat 12-month year for the yearly figure rather than a weighted average like some of the other pet calculators on this site.

With 1 dog at $55 per month and 2 cats at $30 per month each, the dog subtotal is $55, the cat subtotal is 2 x $30 = $60, giving a total monthly cost of $115 and a yearly cost of $115 x 12 = $1,380.
Two dogs, one cat
With 2 dogs at $65 per month each and 1 cat at $35 per month, the dog subtotal is 2 x $65 = $130, the cat subtotal is $35, giving a total monthly cost of $165 and a yearly cost of $165 x 12 = $1,980.
