About the NPS Calculator
This calculator converts raw counts of survey respondents into a single Net Promoter Score, a widely used measure of customer loyalty based on how likely customers are to recommend a business. It is meant for teams running 'how likely are you to recommend us' surveys who want to turn response counts into the standard NPS metric.
How It Works
You enter the number of respondents in three groups: Promoters (scored 9-10), Passives (scored 7-8), and Detractors (scored 0-6). The calculator finds the total number of respondents, calculates the percentage of Promoters minus the percentage of Detractors, and reports that as the Net Promoter Score, along with a qualitative rating label.
Formula & Methodology
Add up all respondents across the three groups to get the total. Subtract the number of Detractors from the number of Promoters, then divide that difference by the total respondent count and multiply by 100. Passives are counted in the total (which affects the denominator) but do not appear directly in the numerator, so a survey with many Passives and few Promoters or Detractors will pull the score closer to zero. The result ranges from -100 (every respondent a Detractor) to +100 (every respondent a Promoter), and the calculator labels it: 70+ as World-class, 50-69 as Excellent, 30-49 as Great, 0-29 as Good, and below 0 as Needs improvement.
Examples
Strong customer loyalty result
Out of 100 respondents: 65 Promoters, 20 Passives, 15 Detractors. NPS = ((65 - 15) / 100) x 100 = 50, rated Excellent.
Weaker result with more detractors
Out of 200 respondents: 60 Promoters, 60 Passives, 80 Detractors. NPS = ((60 - 80) / 200) x 100 = -10, rated Needs improvement, since Detractors outnumber Promoters.

Common Mistakes
- Miscategorizing borderline scores (for example, treating a 7 as a Detractor or an 8 as a Promoter) instead of following the standard 0-6 / 7-8 / 9-10 grouping
- Comparing NPS scores across industries as if there's one universal 'good' threshold, when typical scores vary significantly by sector
- Drawing conclusions from a very small number of total respondents, where a handful of scores can swing the percentage-based result dramatically
Edge Cases to Watch For
- If total respondents (Promoters + Passives + Detractors) is zero, the calculator returns an error, since there is no valid percentage to calculate from an empty survey.
- A high count of Passives lowers the score indirectly by inflating the total respondent count without contributing to the numerator, even though Passives are neither actively negative nor actively positive.
- The rating labels are fixed thresholds (70, 50, 30, 0) that don't adjust for industry; a 'Good' score in one industry may be considered strong, while the same number could be below average in another, since typical NPS benchmarks vary by sector.
- The calculator assumes respondents were correctly bucketed by their 0-10 score into the three groups; if scoring boundaries were applied inconsistently during survey collection, the resulting NPS will not be accurate.
