About the Passer Rating Calculator
The NFL Passer Rating Calculator converts a quarterback's raw box-score line, completions, attempts, passing yards, touchdowns, and interceptions, into the single 0-to-158.3 number the NFL has used as its official rating scale since 1973. Coaches, broadcasters, and fans use it to compare passing performances across games and eras without weighing four separate stat lines in their heads.
How It Works
Enter completions, attempts, passing yards, touchdown passes, and interceptions from a game or season. The calculator turns each stat into a per-attempt rate, converts each rate into one of four component scores, and averages those four components into the final rating. Because attempts sits in the denominator of every component, the calculator requires at least one pass attempt to produce a result.
Formula & Methodology
Each component isolates one skill: completion rate, yards per attempt, touchdown rate, and interception rate, the last one inverted since fewer picks is better. Every component is clamped at a floor of 0 and a ceiling of 2.375 before the four are summed, divided by 6, and multiplied by 100, which is exactly why a perfect passer rating tops out at 158.3, all four components at their 2.375 ceiling, rather than climbing without limit for an outstanding stat line.
Examples
Efficient Starting Performance
24-for-35 passing (68.6%) for 310 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception produces component scores of roughly 1.93, 1.46, 1.71, and 1.66, averaging out to a passer rating of about 112.8, solidly above the league-average range.
A Turnover-Heavy Game
18-for-30 passing for 210 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions yields components of about 1.50, 1.00, 0.67, and 0.71, giving a passer rating near 64.6, well below average and driven mainly by the low touchdown rate and the two picks.

- Mixing up completions and attempts, which inflates the completion-rate component and produces a misleadingly high rating.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Attempts must be greater than zero; the calculator returns an error rather than dividing by zero.
- Extremely good or bad per-attempt rates get clamped, so a quarterback who completes every pass or one who throws a pick on every attempt still produces a component no lower than 0 or higher than 2.375, keeping the rating between 0 and 158.3.
- Because the formula only uses attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions, it ignores sacks, fumbles, and drops, so two quarterbacks with identical numbers in these five categories get identical ratings even behind very different offensive lines.
