About the Omega-3 Intake
The Daily Omega-3 Intake Calculator checks how much combined EPA and DHA you consumed today against the range commonly cited for general cardiovascular health. It gives a quick percentage readout so you can see whether your fish, fish oil, or algae-based intake sits near the low end, the higher end, or below the commonly cited range entirely.
How It Works
You enter one number: milligrams of EPA plus DHA consumed today. The tool divides that figure by a 250mg reference point to produce a percentage, and separately shows the full 250-500mg range that health organizations commonly cite for adults. There is no age or sex adjustment built in, since the calculator is built around one general-purpose range rather than demographic-specific values.
Formula & Methodology
To reproduce this by hand, add up the EPA and DHA content of everything eaten or supplemented today (fish oil labels typically list EPA and DHA separately, so sum both). Divide that combined milligram total by 250, then multiply by 100 to get the displayed percentage. A result of 100% means the low end of the range was reached; 200% means the 500mg upper end was reached.
Examples
Two fish oil capsules
A supplement providing 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA per serving totals 300mg combined. Divided by 250 and multiplied by 100, that comes to 120% of the minimum reference amount, comfortably inside the 250-500mg cited range.
A meat-and-vegetables day with no fish
Someone logging 40mg of incidental omega-3 from eggs and mixed foods gets 40/250 x 100 = 16% of the minimum, a result that would prompt a look at adding a fatty fish meal or supplement.

- Treating one day's intake as representative when omega-3 status in the body reflects intake accumulated over weeks, not a single day's total.
- Forgetting to add EPA and DHA together when a label lists them as two separate line items.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- There is no official US RDA specifically for EPA/DHA, so the 250-500mg figures are a commonly cited guidance range rather than a regulatory standard, and the percentage shown is measured only against the 250mg floor, not the 500mg optimal figure.
- The single input field has no age, sex, or pregnancy option, so the tool cannot reflect situations where omega-3 needs are commonly discussed as higher, such as during pregnancy.
- ALA, the plant-based omega-3 found in flaxseed and walnuts, is a different compound from EPA/DHA; entering ALA milligrams here overstates EPA/DHA status because the body converts ALA to EPA/DHA only in small amounts.
