About the OPS Calculator
The OPS Calculator adds a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage into the single number, OPS, that has become one of baseball's most widely cited hitting statistics. It's meant for quickly summarizing overall offensive performance from two stats most box scores and stat pages already provide.
How It Works
Enter a player's on-base percentage and slugging percentage as decimals, for example 0.360 and 0.460. The calculator adds the two figures together and displays the result to three decimal places, matching the format OPS is conventionally reported in.
Formula & Methodology
Because OPS is a direct sum rather than a weighted average, a point of on-base percentage and a point of slugging percentage contribute equally to the final number, even though the two stats measure different things: one captures how often a batter avoids making an out, the other captures power and extra-base production. That equal weighting is part of why OPS is easy to calculate by hand, and also why more advanced hitting metrics often apply different weights to the two components.

A .360 on-base percentage combined with a .460 slugging percentage produces an OPS of .820, comfortably above the roughly .700 league-average range.

A .320 on-base percentage combined with a .410 slugging percentage produces an OPS of .730, close to a typical league-average season.

- Treating OPS as a precise measure of overall value when it doesn't account for baserunning, defense, or park effects.
- Comparing OPS figures across very different eras or ballparks without adjusting for the offensive environment of each.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- The calculator does not validate that OBP and SLG fall within a realistic 0-to-1-plus range, so an out-of-range or mistyped value will still produce a number without an error.
- OPS can technically exceed 1.000 or fall well below .500, and the calculator reports either without flagging it as unusual, so context such as league averages matters when interpreting the result.
- Because OPS weights OBP and SLG equally, two very different batting profiles, a high-average low-power hitter and a low-average slugger, can produce an identical OPS despite playing very differently.
