About the Pack Weight Ratio
This calculator turns two simple numbers, total pack weight and body weight, into a single percentage that tells a backpacker how heavy their load really is relative to their own frame. Because a 35-pound pack means something very different to a 120-pound hiker than to a 220-pound hiker, expressing the burden as a ratio rather than a flat pound figure gives a fairer read on how demanding a trip will feel.
How It Works
Enter total pack weight in pounds and body weight in pounds. The tool divides pack weight by body weight and multiplies by 100 to get a percentage, then labels that percentage against four bands: Ultralight, Lightweight, Traditional (recommended max), or Heavy. If body weight is entered as zero or left blank, the calculator returns an error instead of a result since the ratio is undefined.
Formula & Methodology
To work this out by hand, weigh your fully loaded pack (including water and food) and your own body weight in the same unit, then divide the pack figure by the body figure and multiply by 100. The result is then bucketed: 10% or under is labeled Ultralight, 10.01% to 15% is Lightweight, 15.01% to 20% is Traditional and treated as the recommended ceiling, and anything above 20% is flagged as Heavy with a suggestion to reduce load.
Examples
Weekend Trip, Lighter Hiker
A hiker weighing 140 lb carries a 24 lb pack. The ratio is (24 / 140) x 100 = 17.1%, which falls in the Traditional (recommended max) band.
Ultralight Setup
A 180 lb hiker carries a trimmed-down 16 lb pack. The ratio is (16 / 180) x 100 = 8.9%, placing it in the Ultralight category.

- Treating the 20% cutoff as a hard safety limit rather than a general guideline, when terrain, trip duration, and individual conditioning all affect what load is actually comfortable.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Entering a body weight of zero or a negative number triggers an error message rather than a division-by-zero result.
- The tool does not distinguish base weight from consumables like food and water, so a pack weighed right after resupply will read heavier than the same pack on the last day of a trip.
- The four category labels use fixed percentage cutoffs (10%, 15%, 20%) regardless of trip length, terrain, or the hiker's fitness or joint health, all of which affect how a given ratio actually feels on the trail.
