Formula & Methodology
US basis weight is defined as the weight, in pounds, of 500 sheets of that paper cut to its category's traditional uncut "parent" sheet size, and each category's parent size is different. That's why the divisors vary so widely, text/book stock's divisor of 1.48 is much smaller than cover stock's 2.708, so the same GSM value converts to a noticeably higher lb number for text stock than for cover stock.
