About the Paver Base
A paver patio's durability depends more on what's underneath it than on the pavers themselves, and estimating the gravel base and bedding sand separately keeps both layers from being underbought.
How It Works
The calculator multiplies the patio area by the gravel base depth to find gravel volume, and separately multiplies the same area by the bedding sand depth to find sand volume, converting both to cubic yards.
Examples
A standard patio
A 200 sq ft patio with a 4 inch gravel base and 1 inch of bedding sand needs about 2.47 cubic yards of gravel and 0.62 cubic yards of sand.
A driveway-rated base
The same 200 sq ft area with a 6 inch gravel base instead needs about 3.7 cubic yards of gravel, notably more than the pedestrian-rated depth.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- A 4 inch compacted gravel base is standard for pedestrian patios and walkways, but driveways or any area seeing vehicle traffic typically need 6-8 inches instead.
- Gravel needs to be compacted in lifts (layers), not dumped and compacted all at once, especially for anything deeper than a few inches, which affects labor but not the material volume itself.
- Skipping the gravel base or under-compacting it is one of the most common reasons paver patios become uneven or sink over time.
