About the Pipe Size (NPS)
Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) is a naming convention for pipe, not a literal measurement, so a pipe labeled "1 inch" does not actually measure 1 inch across. This calculator looks up the true outer diameter that corresponds to a chosen NPS designation, in both inches and millimeters, so you can order fittings, flanges, or bushings that will actually fit.
How It Works
Pick a nominal size from the dropdown, from 1/8 inch up to 12 inch. The calculator pulls the matching outer diameter from a fixed reference table built on the ASME B36.10 standard, then converts that inch value to millimeters for a second reading.
Formula & Methodology
For NPS 1/8 inch through NPS 12, the table stores each size's known outer diameter (for example NPS 1 = 1.315 in, NPS 4 = 4.500 in, NPS 12 = 12.75 in). Selecting a size retrieves that fixed value, multiplies it by 25.4 to get millimeters, and rounds the inch figure to three decimal places and the millimeter figure to one decimal place for display.

Selecting NPS 1 inch returns an actual outer diameter of 1.315 inches, or 33.4 millimeters - noticeably larger than the "1 inch" name suggests.
NPS 4 inch pipe
Selecting NPS 4 inch returns an outer diameter of 4.500 inches, which converts to 114.3 millimeters, the figure needed when ordering a matching flange or coupling.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- Below NPS 14, the nominal number and the real outer diameter diverge noticeably; NPS 1 is really 1.315 inches, not 1.000 inches.
- The outer diameter stays fixed for a given NPS across every wall thickness schedule; only the wall thickness (and therefore the inner diameter) changes between schedules like Schedule 40 and Schedule 80.
- This tool covers only pipe sizing from NPS 1/8 through NPS 12; larger pipe and separate tubing standards follow different diameter conventions not included here.
- If an unrecognized size value were ever passed in, the calculator falls back to the NPS 1 diameter of 1.315 inches rather than returning an error.
