About the Pitch Count Limit
This calculator checks a youth baseball pitcher's daily pitch total against age-based maximums modeled on USA Baseball and MLB's Pitch Smart guidelines. It is built for coaches, parents, and players who want a quick reference for how many more pitches are safe today and what rest period should follow.
How It Works
The user selects the player's age from 7 to 18 and enters the number of pitches thrown so far today. The calculator looks up a fixed daily maximum for that age from a preset table, then compares pitches thrown against percentage thresholds of that maximum to recommend a rest period, and finally reports how many pitches remain before hitting the daily cap.
Formula & Methodology
The age-to-max-pitch table used is: ages 7-8, 50 pitches; ages 9-10, 75 pitches; ages 11-12, 85 pitches; ages 13-16, 95 pitches; ages 17-18, 105 pitches. Any age not found in the table falls back to an 85-pitch default. To check rest requirements by hand, take the age's maximum, multiply by 0.70 and by 0.85, and compare the pitches-thrown figure against both thresholds, applying the higher rest tier that is met.
Examples
11-Year-Old Mid-Game Check
An 11-year-old has thrown 45 pitches. The age-11 max is 85, and 70% of 85 is 59.5 (rounds to 60), so 45 pitches is below that threshold and the recommendation stays at no rest required, with 40 pitches remaining before the daily cap.
14-Year-Old Approaching the Limit
A 14-year-old has thrown 82 pitches against a 95-pitch max. Since 82 is above 85% of 95 (80.75), the calculator recommends 4+ days of rest, with only 13 pitches remaining before the daily cap.

- Treating the guideline as a substitute for the specific league's official rules, when actual tournament or league policies can set different limits.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- For pitchers age 8 or younger, throwing 21 or more pitches always triggers at least 1 day of rest, a rule layered on top of and independent of the percentage-based tiers.
- The rest-day thresholds are evaluated independently and the later checks can overwrite an earlier one, so the calculator effectively reports only the highest rest tier reached rather than combining them.
- The note attached to the result explicitly flags that actual league rules may differ, since some leagues adopt stricter or looser pitch count policies than the Pitch Smart baseline used here.
