About the Pond Volume Calculator
This calculator converts a backyard pond's surface area and average depth into an estimated water volume in gallons. Pond owners use it to size a pump, filter, or dosage of pond treatment chemicals correctly, since most of that equipment is rated by gallon capacity.
How It Works
You enter the pond's surface area in square feet and its average depth in feet. The calculator multiplies area by depth to get the volume in cubic feet, then converts that to gallons using the standard conversion factor of 7.48 gallons per cubic foot.
Examples
Small backyard koi pond
A pond with 100 sq ft of surface area and an average depth of 2 ft comes out to 100 x 2 x 7.48 = 1,496 gallons.
Larger irregular pond
A pond estimated at 250 sq ft (after summing a few simpler shapes) with an average depth of 3 ft computes to 250 x 3 x 7.48 = 5,610 gallons.

- Both surface area and average depth must be greater than zero, otherwise the calculator returns an error instead of a volume
- Irregularly shaped ponds need their surface area estimated by breaking the shape into simpler rectangles or circles and summing them, since the calculator only takes a single area figure
- Using average depth rather than maximum depth matters here: a pond with a shallow planting shelf and a deeper center should use a depth that reflects the whole footprint, not just the deepest point, or the volume will be overestimated
