How It Works
You select a tank size, either the standard 20lb tank or a small 1lb cylinder, enter your grill's BTU per hour rating, and estimate what percentage of that rating you typically use. The calculator converts the tank's usable propane weight into available energy, then divides that by your grill's effective hourly burn rate to produce an estimated number of grilling hours.
Formula & Methodology
Propane carries about 21,600 BTU of energy per pound. A tank is assumed to be filled or exchanged at roughly 80% of its rated weight capacity (a 20lb tank yields 16 usable lb, a 1lb cylinder yields 0.8 usable lb), which is standard practice that leaves room for vapor expansion inside the tank. Multiplying usable pounds by 21,600 gives total available BTU. On the demand side, a grill rarely runs every burner wide open for an entire cook, so the usage percentage scales the rated BTU down to a more realistic effective hourly draw. Dividing total available BTU by that effective hourly draw gives the estimated hours of grilling time.

A 20lb tank feeding a 36,000 BTU/hr grill run at 70% typical usage gives 16 usable lb x 21,600 = 345,600 total BTU, divided by an effective 25,200 BTU/hr, for about 13.7 hours of total grilling time.
