About the HR Recovery
How quickly your heart rate drops after you stop exercising is itself a meaningful fitness signal, separate from your heart rate during the workout. Our Heart Rate Recovery Calculator measures that drop over the first minute after exercise and rates it against general benchmarks.
How It Works
The calculator subtracts your heart rate one minute after stopping exercise from your heart rate at the moment you stopped, then rates the resulting drop as excellent, good, average, or below average based on commonly cited research benchmarks.
Formula & Methodology
After exercise ends, the parasympathetic nervous system reactivates and begins slowing heart rate back toward resting levels, and how quickly that happens reflects autonomic nervous system function, which tends to improve with cardiovascular fitness. Research studies, most notably work published in the New England Journal of Medicine in the late 1990s, found that a smaller drop in the first minute after exercise (roughly 12 bpm or less) was associated with higher long-term cardiovascular risk in the populations studied, which is where the general benchmark bands used here originate.
Step-by-Step: Calculating It By Hand
- 1Exercise to a moderately high intensity, then note your heart rate at the exact moment you stop.
- 2Stay still (or keep moving very lightly) and measure heart rate again exactly one minute later.
- 3Subtract the one-minute reading from the peak reading.
- 4Compare the drop to the reference bands: 25+ bpm is excellent, 18-24 is good, 12-17 is average, and under 12 is below average.

Good recovery
A peak heart rate of 165 bpm dropping to 135 bpm one minute later is a 30 bpm drop, landing in the excellent recovery category.
Below average recovery
The same 165 bpm peak dropping only to 158 bpm one minute later is just a 7 bpm drop, landing in the below-average category worth tracking over time.

- A single measurement carries some day-to-day noise from factors like hydration, sleep, and stress, so tracking recovery rate over multiple sessions is more informative than any one reading.
- This benchmark research generally studied recovery immediately after a standardized exercise test, so recovery measured after a very different type or intensity of workout may not map perfectly onto the same reference bands.
- A below-average recovery rate on its own isn't a diagnosis, but a consistently low reading may be worth mentioning to a healthcare provider, particularly alongside other risk factors.
