About the Respiratory Rate Check
The Resting Respiratory Rate Checker converts a manually counted breath total into a breaths-per-minute rate and compares it against the commonly cited normal adult range. It is designed for a simple self-check using nothing more than a timer and a count of breaths, the same basic method used in clinical settings.
How It Works
Enter how many breaths you counted and over how many seconds you counted them. The calculator scales that count up to a per-minute rate and sorts the result into one of three categories: below, within, or above the typical adult range.
Formula & Methodology
To calculate by hand, divide the number of breaths counted by the number of seconds counted, then multiply by 60 to project the rate onto a full minute. A count of 10 breaths over 30 seconds, for example, becomes (10/30) x 60 = 20 breaths per minute, right at the top edge of the normal range.
Examples
Standard one-minute count
Counting 15 breaths over a full 60-second window gives 15 breaths per minute, which falls within the normal adult range.
Short count showing an elevated rate
Counting 6 breaths over just 15 seconds scales up to (6/15) x 60 = 24 breaths per minute, placing the result above the typical adult range.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- The counting duration is clamped to a minimum of 1 second, preventing a divide-by-zero error if a zero or negative duration is entered.
- Counting over a short window magnifies any counting error: miscounting by one breath over a 15-second count shifts the calculated rate by 4 breaths per minute, while the same miscount over a full 60-second count only shifts it by 1.
- The normal range's upper boundary is inclusive at 20, so a result of exactly 20 breaths per minute is categorized as normal while 20.1 is categorized as above range.
