About the Retaining Wall Blocks
Retaining wall blocks are counted by dividing the wall's total face area by a single block's exposed face size, a simple calculation that hides how much unglamorous prep work, base gravel and drainage, sits behind that visible face.
How It Works
The calculator multiplies wall length by wall height to get total face area, divides by the block's face area to find a base block count, then adds your waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
Examples
A modest garden wall
A 30×3 ft wall with 0.75 sq ft blocks and 10% waste needs about 132 blocks.
A taller wall
The same 30 ft length at 4 ft high instead of 3 needs about 176 blocks, since face area scales directly with height.

- Taller retaining walls, generally over 3-4 ft, often need geogrid reinforcement and engineered design, not just a straightforward block stack.
