About the Wall Drainage Gravel
Free-draining gravel installed behind a retaining wall gives groundwater a path down to a drain pipe at the base, relieving the hydrostatic pressure that is one of the more common causes of wall bulging or failure. This calculator estimates how much drainage gravel is needed to fill that backfill zone based on the wall's dimensions and the width of the gravel zone.
How It Works
Enter the wall's length and height in feet, along with the width of the gravel backfill zone in inches, with 12 inches shown as a common minimum recommendation, though the field can be set to any width. The calculator treats the gravel zone as a simple rectangular volume running the full length and height of the wall, converts it to cubic yards, and multiplies by 1.4 to estimate the delivered weight in tons.

By hand: convert the gravel zone width from inches to feet, multiply by the wall's length and height to get cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, and multiply by 1.4 to estimate the delivered weight in tons.

At the default 30-foot length, 4-foot height, and 12-inch gravel width, the volume works out to about 4.44 cubic yards, or roughly 6.22 tons.
Taller Retaining Wall
For a 50-foot long, 6-foot high wall with an 18-inch gravel zone, the volume comes to about 16.67 cubic yards, weighing approximately 23.33 tons.
