About the Underlayment Calculator

Roofing underlayment goes down before shingles or another finish roofing material, and it needs to be ordered with enough surplus to cover required overlaps at seams, valleys, and ridges. This calculator converts your roof's area, a chosen roll's coverage, and a waste percentage into the number of rolls to order.

How It Works

You provide the roof area in square feet, how much area a single roll covers (synthetic rolls commonly cover about 400 square feet), and an overlap and waste percentage. The calculator increases the raw roof area by that waste percentage, then divides the adjusted area by roll coverage and rounds up to a whole number of rolls, since underlayment can only be purchased in full rolls.

Formula & Methodology

To check this by hand, start with your roof's total square footage and add your chosen waste percentage on top of it, since that overlap material still has to come from somewhere within your roll count. Divide that inflated area by the coverage printed on your specific roll (synthetic underlayment commonly runs about 400 sq ft per roll, though felt paper products vary by weight and roll size). Round the result up to the next whole roll, since a roofer can't buy a partial roll, and a small remainder still means opening a new one.
