About the RPE 1RM Calculator

The RPE-Based One Rep Max Calculator estimates a lifter's one-rep max from a submaximal set by combining the weight lifted, reps completed, and how hard the set felt on the 6-10 Rate of Perceived Exertion scale. Unlike a purely reps-based formula, it accounts for how many reps were left in the tank, which changes the estimate even when weight and reps are identical. It is built for lifters using RPE-based programming rather than fixed percentage plans.

How It Works

Enter the weight lifted, the reps completed, and the RPE rating for that set, where 10 means no reps were left and 9 means one more rep was possible. The calculator converts RPE into reps in reserve, adds that to the completed reps to estimate how many reps could have been done to failure at that weight, and looks up the matching percentage of one-rep max from a standard reps-to-percentage table.

Reps in reserve (RIR) = 10 - RPE. Effective max reps = reps completed + RIR, rounded to the nearest whole number and capped at 12. Percent of 1RM is read from a fixed table (1 rep = 100%, 2 = 95.5%, 3 = 92.2%, down to 12 = 69.4%, with 65% used if no table value applies). Estimated 1RM = weight / (percent of 1RM / 100).

Formula & Methodology

Take a set of 200 lb for 5 reps at RPE 8. Reps in reserve = 10 - 8 = 2, so effective max reps = 5 + 2 = 7. The table maps 7 effective reps to 81.1% of 1RM, so estimated 1RM = 200 / 0.811, which rounds to 247 lb.

  • If reps and RPE combine to a value below 1, such as a very low rep count at RPE 10, the lookup table has no matching entry and the calculator falls back to a flat 65% of max.
  • RPE values outside the intended 6-10 range aren't blocked by the calculation itself, only suggested by the input field's min and max, so an unusual RPE still produces a mathematically valid but less meaningful result.
