About the Sheet Metal Gauge
The Sheet Metal Gauge Converter turns a gauge number, the traditional way sheet steel and sheet aluminum are ordered, into an actual thickness in inches and millimeters. Because gauge numbering runs backward (a smaller number means a thicker sheet) and steel and aluminum use two unrelated standards, converting a fabrication drawing's gauge callout into a caliper-checkable thickness is easy to get wrong without a reference. This calculator handles both materials from a single gauge input.
How It Works
Enter a gauge number and choose whether the material is steel or aluminum/brass. For steel, the calculator rounds the gauge to a whole number, clamps it to the 3-30 range covered by the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge table, and looks up the matching thickness in inches. For aluminum and brass, it instead calculates thickness directly from the Brown & Sharpe geometric formula, the same progression used for AWG wire sizes. The result is shown in both millimeters and inches.
Formula & Methodology
The Manufacturers' Standard Gauge table used for steel does not follow a single equation; it is a standardized list of thicknesses (for example, gauge 16 = 0.0598 in, gauge 20 = 0.0359 in) built up historically rather than derived mathematically, so the calculator stores the full table and clamps any gauge number to the 3-30 range it covers. The Brown & Sharpe series used for aluminum and brass, by contrast, is a true geometric progression: raising 92 to the power of (36 minus the gauge) divided by 39 means every 6-gauge step doubles or halves the resulting thickness, exactly like AWG wire gauge.
Examples
16-gauge steel
At the default 16-gauge steel setting, the table lookup returns 0.0598 in, which converts to 1.519 mm.
16-gauge aluminum
Switching the same gauge number to aluminum/brass instead uses the geometric formula: 0.005 x 92^((36-16)/39) = 0.005 x 92^0.513, or about 0.0508 in (1.291 mm), noticeably thinner than the steel result for the identical gauge number.

Common Mistakes
- Applying a steel gauge chart to aluminum sheet, or vice versa, which produces a thickness that is off by a noticeable margin since the two standards diverge.
- Assuming gauge numbers scale linearly, when in fact a lower gauge number means a thicker sheet and the spacing between adjacent gauge numbers is not even for steel.
- Ordering material by gauge number alone without confirming which standard a supplier is using, since some regions and industries reference other gauge systems entirely.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Any steel gauge entered above 30 or below 3 is clamped to the nearest table boundary before lookup, so extremely thick or thin gauge numbers won't return an out-of-range result.
- If a gauge number somehow isn't matched in the table after clamping, the calculator falls back to the gauge 16 thickness (0.0598 in) as a default rather than returning an error.
- Steel and aluminum sheet of the same nominal gauge number are never the same thickness, since the two materials follow entirely separate historical standards.
