About the Sinclair Coefficient
The Sinclair Coefficient Calculator converts a weightlifter's total (snatch plus clean and jerk) into a bodyweight-adjusted score, so a 61kg lifter's total can be fairly compared against a lifter in the 109kg+ class. How It Works
Enter your sex, bodyweight in kilograms, and combined snatch plus clean and jerk total. The calculator applies a sex-specific coefficient curve that scales up totals from lighter bodyweight classes while leaving totals from the heaviest class, at or above a fixed reference bodyweight, unscaled. The output is your Sinclair Total, the scaled score used for cross-category ranking, alongside the raw coefficient itself.
Formula & Methodology
To calculate by hand, divide your bodyweight by the reference weight b for your sex, take the base-10 logarithm of that ratio, and square it. Multiply the squared log by constant A, then raise 10 to that power to get your coefficient. Multiply your total by the coefficient to get your Sinclair Total. Because bw/b is less than 1 for anyone lighter than the reference weight, the log is negative, but squaring it makes the exponent positive, which is what pushes the coefficient above 1.
Examples
81kg Men's Lifter
A male lifter weighing 81 kg with a 300 kg total gets a coefficient from log10(81/193.609) squared and multiplied by 0.722762521, yielding roughly 1.158, so the Sinclair Total lands near 347.
64kg Women's Lifter
A female lifter weighing 64 kg with a 200 kg total sees her bodyweight ratio to 153.757 kg raise her coefficient to roughly 1.22, pushing her Sinclair Total to about 244, ahead of an unscaled 200 kg total from a heavier lifter.

- Forgetting that the coefficient locks at 1 once bodyweight reaches the reference weight, so heavier lifters are compared on raw total alone above that point.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Lifters at or heavier than the reference bodyweight (193.609 kg for men, 153.757 kg for women) get a coefficient of exactly 1, since the scaling formula only applies below that threshold.
- The calculator requires both bodyweight and total to be greater than zero and returns an error otherwise, since a zero or negative bodyweight has no meaningful coefficient.
- Sinclair coefficients are periodically republished after major results reset the reference lifter's total, so a score calculated with one set of constants will not exactly match a score computed years later with revised constants.
