How It Works

You enter the total eave/overhang length around the building, the overhang depth (how far the roof extends past the wall face, commonly 12 to 24 inches), and a waste percentage for cuts around corners, vents, and fascia returns. The calculator converts overhang depth to feet, multiplies it by the eave length to get raw square footage, then adds the waste factor. It also converts that area into an estimated count of standard 12-foot soffit panels.

Soffit area (sq ft) = eave length (ft) x (overhang depth (in) / 12) x (1 + waste%). Panel count = soffit area / (12 x overhang depth in feet), rounded up.

Formula & Methodology

Because each 12-foot panel is assumed to span the full overhang depth, the overhang-depth term cancels out of the panel-count calculation: the number of panels reduces to the waste-adjusted eave length divided by 12. In practice this means panel count tracks eave length directly, while the square-footage figure is what changes with overhang depth.
