How It Works
You enter household size, a solar fraction (the percentage of annual water heating energy the solar system is expected to supply, commonly 50-80% depending on climate and system sizing), and your electricity rate. The calculator applies a standard per-person annual electric water heating baseline to your household size to estimate total water heating energy use, then multiplies that by the solar fraction to find how many kWh the solar system displaces. That displaced energy is converted to a dollar figure using your electricity rate.

For a household of 3 with a 65% solar fraction and a $0.16/kWh rate: total water heating load is 3 x 1,150 = 3,450 kWh per year. At 65% solar fraction, the system offsets 3,450 x 0.65 = 2,242.5 kWh. At $0.16 per kWh, that is roughly $359 in avoided electricity cost for the year. The remaining 35% of the load is still met by a backup electric element or other conventional source.
