How It Works
The calculator applies a simplified calorie-per-step estimate scaled to body weight, and separately estimates walking distance using an average stride-length-based conversion factor, giving both calories burned and approximate distance from a raw step count.
Formula & Methodology
Both conversions rest on population averages: a typical stride length (roughly 2.1-2.5 feet, varying with height) is used to convert step count into distance, and a per-step calorie cost scaled to body weight approximates the energy required to move that body a typical stride's distance repeatedly. Neither conversion is exact for any individual, but both are reasonable approximations useful for translating an easily tracked number (steps) into more intuitively meaningful figures.
Step-by-Step: Calculating It By Hand

Scaling with body weight
The same 10,000 steps burns more calories for a heavier person and fewer for a lighter person, since more body mass requires more energy to move the same distance.
