The streaming and data usage carbon footprint calculator estimates the CO2 emissions associated with weekly video streaming, based on how many hours you watch and at what quality level. Because published research on this topic varies enormously, the result is meant as an order-of-magnitude estimate rather than a precise measurement.
How It Works
You enter weekly streaming hours and choose a quality tier: standard definition (about 1 GB per hour), HD (about 3 GB per hour), or 4K/Ultra HD (about 7 GB per hour). The calculator multiplies hours by the data rate for that tier to estimate weekly gigabytes, converts data volume to energy using a fixed kWh-per-gigabyte figure, then converts that energy to CO2 using a fixed grid carbon-intensity figure, producing both a weekly and an annualized result.
Formula & Methodology
At the calculator's defaults, 10 hours per week at HD quality gives 10 x 3 = 30 GB per week. That converts to 30 x 0.06 = 1.8 kWh, and then 1.8 x 0.3878 is about 0.70 kg CO2 for the week. Multiplying by 52 weeks and dividing by 1,000 gives roughly 0.036 metric tons of CO2 per year from that viewing habit.

Default HD Viewing
At the default 10 hours per week of HD streaming, the calculator estimates about 0.70 kg of CO2 weekly, or roughly 0.036 metric tons annually.
Heavy 4K Streaming
Watching 20 hours per week in 4K works out to 140 GB weekly, 8.4 kWh, and about 3.26 kg CO2 per week, or roughly 0.169 metric tons of CO2 over a year.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- The 0.06 kWh-per-GB and 0.3878 kg-CO2-per-kWh figures are fixed constants; actual network energy intensity and grid carbon intensity vary substantially by region, provider infrastructure, and time, and published academic estimates for streaming energy differ by an order of magnitude depending on methodology.
- The calculation does not distinguish device type, so the same estimated CO2 applies whether you are streaming on a phone or a large 4K television, even though device power draw differs meaningfully.
