About the Student Time Budget
The Student Weekly Time Budget Calculator subtracts a student's fixed weekly commitments, classes, studying, work, and sleep, from the 168 hours in a week to show how much discretionary time is actually left over. How It Works
Enter weekly hours spent in class, weekly hours spent studying, weekly hours spent at a job, and hours of sleep per night. The calculator multiplies the nightly sleep figure by 7 to get a weekly sleep total, adds all four commitments together, and subtracts that sum from 168 total hours in a week to report the hours left over.
Formula & Methodology
Using the default inputs, 15 class hours, 30 study hours, 10 work hours, and 7.5 hours of sleep per night, sleep converts to 7.5 x 7 = 52.5 hours per week. Adding all four together, 15 + 30 + 10 + 52.5 = 107.5 committed hours. Subtracting that from 168 leaves 60.5 free hours for the week, covering everything not already accounted for: meals, commuting, socializing, and downtime.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- If committed hours add up to more than 168, the free-hours figure goes negative and the calculator notes that something in the schedule, sleep, work, study, or course load, will need to be reduced, since a week genuinely cannot hold more than 168 hours.
- Sleep is entered as an average per night and multiplied by 7 automatically; entering an already-weekly sleep total would double-count it once the calculator applies its own multiplication.
- The remaining free-hours figure is a ceiling, not a guarantee of leisure time, since it does not separately subtract meals, commuting, chores, or other daily fixed activities outside the four tracked categories.
- Class and study hours are treated as flat weekly averages, which smooths over weeks with exams or heavier reading that do not match a typical week.
