Formula & Methodology
Pool swimming is measured almost universally in meters (or yards in the US), and 100m is both a standard competitive race distance and a convenient, easy-to-compare unit for pace, which is why swimmers and coaches default to it rather than per-mile pace the way runners do. Scaling any completed swim distance and time down to a per-100m figure lets that pace be projected forward to other distances, assuming a roughly consistent effort level across the projected distance.
Step-by-Step: Calculating It By Hand

Standard workout swim

- Rest intervals between repeats in interval training aren't factored into a single continuous-swim pace calculation like this one.
