About the SWOLF Calculator
The SWOLF Calculator measures swimming efficiency by adding the time it takes to complete one pool length to the number of strokes taken during that length. Named as a blend of "swim" and "golf," it works the same way as golf scoring: a lower number represents better performance. Swimmers and coaches use it to track technique improvements that a stopwatch alone would not reveal.
How It Works
Enter the time in seconds it took to swim one length of the pool and the number of strokes taken during that length. The calculator simply adds the two numbers together to produce the SWOLF score. Because it combines a speed measurement (time) with an efficiency measurement (stroke count), swimming the same length faster or with fewer strokes both lower the score.
Formula & Methodology
There is no scaling or weighting involved: count strokes from the moment your hand enters the water at the start of the length until your hand touches the wall, and add that number directly to the elapsed time in seconds for the same length. If a swimmer takes 28 seconds and 16 strokes, the SWOLF score is 28 plus 16, or 44. To lower that score, a swimmer either has to swim faster without adding strokes, or take fewer strokes without slowing down, both of which reflect improved stroke efficiency rather than simply trying harder.

Freestyle Length in a 25m Pool
Swimming one 25-meter length in 28 seconds using 16 strokes produces a SWOLF score of 44.
Slower, More Efficient Length
A swimmer taking 35 seconds but only 20 strokes for the same length gets a SWOLF score of 55, showing how a slower swim with more strokes still scores worse than the first example.

- Chasing a lower SWOLF number by gliding excessively, which can lower the score without actually improving race-pace speed.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- The score is only meaningful when time and stroke count are measured over the same, consistent length; a longer or shorter pool changes the baseline and makes scores from different pools hard to compare directly.
- SWOLF rewards a lower number regardless of how it was achieved, so a swimmer could lower their score by gliding and undercounting strokes rather than genuinely improving technique.
- There is no built-in guard against zero or negative inputs, so an unrealistic time or stroke count still produces a numeric result the calculator will not flag as invalid.
