About the Tile Grout Calculator
The Tile Grout Calculator estimates the pounds of grout needed for a tile job based on total tile area, individual tile dimensions, and grout joint width and depth. It accounts for the fact that smaller tiles need proportionally more grout than larger tiles laid over the same area, since more tiles means more linear feet of joints to fill.
How It Works
After entering total area along with tile length, width, thickness, and joint width, the calculator applies the standard grout coverage formula to compute pounds of grout needed per square inch of tile, then scales that up to your full project area. Tile thickness stands in for grout joint depth in the formula, and the joint width together with the tile's perimeter-to-area ratio determines how much grout each joint consumes.
Formula & Methodology
The bracketed term, (L+W) divided by (L times W), captures how much joint length exists relative to tile area: smaller tiles have a higher ratio because more edges fit into the same square footage. Multiplying that ratio by joint width, joint depth (tile thickness), and the constant 0.13 gives grout weight per square inch of tile, which the calculator then scales up by the total tiled area converted to square inches.
Examples
Standard 12x12 floor tile
For 100 square feet of 12 by 12 inch tile with a 1/8 inch joint and 3/8 inch tile thickness, the calculator returns about 14.6 pounds of grout.
Small-format mosaic tile
For 250 square feet of 2 by 2 inch mosaic tile with a 3/16 inch joint and 1/4 inch thickness, grout usage rises to roughly 219 pounds, illustrating how much more grout small tile consumes per square foot than large-format tile.

- Using nominal joint width alone without also factoring in joint depth (tile thickness), which understates or overstates how much grout each joint actually holds.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Tile thickness is used directly as grout joint depth, so if actual joints are recessed shallower than the tile's full thickness, the estimate will run somewhat high.
- Very small mosaic tile with a high joint-to-area ratio can push grout usage well above what a flat rule-of-thumb coverage rate would suggest, so a single coverage number shouldn't be applied across different tile sizes.
- The formula assumes one uniform tile size and joint width across the whole area; a job mixing field tile with a different-sized border or accent tile should be calculated in separate sections.
