About the Time of Possession %
The Time of Possession Percentage Calculator converts a football team's raw possession time, in minutes and seconds, into a percentage of the total game length. It is the same calculation broadcasters and stat sheets use to report the time of possession split shown at the end of games. Enter the minutes and seconds a team held the ball along with the total game length, and it returns the possession share as a percentage.
How It Works
You enter possession time as whole minutes plus extra seconds, and total game length in minutes, typically 60 for a standard NFL or college game or 48 for other formats. The calculator first converts the seconds portion into a fraction of a minute and adds it to the minutes to get total possession time as a single decimal number, then divides that by the total game length and multiplies by 100.
Formula & Methodology
To work this out by hand, first convert the seconds portion into a decimal fraction of a minute by dividing by 60. For example, 32 minutes and 15 seconds becomes 32 plus 15 divided by 60, or 32.25 minutes. Divide that by the total game length, 60 minutes for a standard game, to get 32.25 divided by 60, or 0.5375, then multiply by 100 to express it as 53.8%, rounded to one decimal place.
