How It Works

In the US, 15–20% is standard for full-service restaurants, 10% is common for smaller checks or casual service, and 20%+ is typical for exceptional service; many other countries either don't expect tipping at all or build a service charge directly into the bill.
The one real design decision is which amount to tip on: the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total. Etiquette guides generally favor tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax isn't part of what the server or driver actually provided - but plenty of people simply tip on the total for convenience, and either is defensible.
