About the Tire Size to Diameter
The Tire Size to Diameter Converter takes the three numbers printed on a tire's sidewall, such as 225/45R17, and calculates the tire's actual overall diameter, circumference, and how many times it rotates per mile. It is useful for anyone comparing tire sizes, checking speedometer accuracy, or verifying that a replacement tire will clear the wheel well.
How It Works
Enter the section width in millimeters, the aspect ratio as a percentage, and the wheel (rim) diameter in inches, the same three values found in a metric tire size code. The calculator first finds the sidewall height from the width and aspect ratio, adds that height to both the top and bottom of the wheel diameter to get the tire's overall diameter, then derives circumference and revolutions per mile from that diameter.
Formula & Methodology
A tire's sidewall height is the section width multiplied by the aspect ratio percentage, since aspect ratio expresses sidewall height as a percentage of section width. That height appears twice in the overall diameter, once above and once below the wheel, so it is doubled, converted from millimeters to inches by dividing by 25.4, and added to the wheel's rim diameter. Circumference then follows directly from diameter using pi, and dividing the number of inches in a mile (63,360) by that circumference gives how many full rotations the tire makes per mile.
Examples
225/45R17 (default)
Sidewall height = 225 x 0.45 = 101.25 mm. Overall diameter = 17 + (2 x 101.25) / 25.4 = 17 + 7.97 = 24.97 in (634.3 mm). Circumference = 24.97 x pi = 78.45 in, giving about 808 revolutions per mile.
205/55R16
Sidewall height = 205 x 0.55 = 112.75 mm. Overall diameter = 16 + (2 x 112.75) / 25.4 = 16 + 8.88 = 24.88 in (631.9 mm). Circumference = 24.88 x pi = 78.15 in, giving about 811 revolutions per mile, a diameter close to but not identical to the 225/45R17 example above.

- Confusing aspect ratio with a fixed sidewall height in millimeters, when it is actually a percentage of section width that must be recalculated for every different width.
- Overlooking that a plus-sizing change (larger wheel, lower-profile tire) is only diameter-neutral if the sidewall height reduction exactly offsets the wheel diameter increase.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- The calculator assumes a standard metric tire size format (width/aspect ratio R wheel diameter) and does not account for load rating, speed rating, or tire construction, none of which affect the geometric diameter calculation.
- Very low aspect ratio tires ("low profile") produce a sidewall height close to zero, so their overall diameter approaches the bare wheel diameter, while very high aspect ratio tires add substantially more height.
- Revolutions per mile is rounded to the nearest whole number, which is precise enough for comparing tire sizes but is an approximation of real-world rolling distance, which also varies slightly with tire pressure and load.
