How It Works
You enter one number: pounds of food scraps produced per week. The calculator divides that by 7 to get a daily scrap rate, then divides the daily rate by 0.5, since a healthy population of red wiggler worms can eat roughly half its own body weight in scraps each day. The resulting worm weight doubles as the recommended minimum bin surface area in square feet, because red wigglers are shallow surface feeders and a wide, flat bin gives them more usable habitat than a deep one.

To size a bin by hand, take your weekly scrap total and divide by 7 for a daily average. Divide that daily figure by 0.5 lb, the amount of scraps 1 lb of worms can process per day, to get the worm weight you need.
