About the Hitting Percentage Calculator
This calculator turns a volleyball hitter's raw attack log into a single efficiency number: hitting percentage. Coaches and stat-keepers use it to judge how productive a hitter actually was during a set or match, not just how many kills they piled up.
How It Works
Enter kills, attack errors, and total attack attempts for the same stretch of play. The calculator subtracts errors from kills, then divides that net figure by total attempts to produce a hitting percentage shown to three decimal places, the same format used on official volleyball stat sheets.
Formula & Methodology
Tally every attack attempt in the period being measured, whether that is one set, one match, or a full tournament. Count a kill each time the attack ends the rally in the hitter's favor, and an attack error each time the ball is hit out of bounds, into the net, or is stuffed back for a point against the hitter's team. Subtract errors from kills to get a net figure, which can go negative if errors outnumber kills, then divide by the total number of attempts, including attacks that were kept in play by the defense.
Examples
Efficient outside hitter
A hitter records 12 kills and 4 errors on 30 total attempts. Hitting percentage = (12 - 4) / 30 = 0.267, a solid efficiency figure for a high-volume attacker.
Struggling night at the net
A middle blocker logs 6 kills and 9 errors across 20 attempts. Hitting percentage = (6 - 9) / 20 = -0.150, showing the errors outweighed the kills that match.

Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to include attempts that were dug up by the defense (no kill or error) in the total attempts count, which inflates the percentage.
- Confusing kill percentage (kills only, over attempts) with hitting percentage, which factors in errors and produces a lower number.
- Mixing stats from multiple matches without separating them, which can hide match-to-match efficiency swings.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- If total attempts is entered as zero, the calculator returns an error instead of dividing by zero.
- A hitter with more errors than kills produces a negative hitting percentage, which is mathematically valid and reflects poor attacking efficiency for that stretch.
- The result is not capped, so an attacker with every attempt going for a kill and zero errors returns exactly 1.000.
- Attempts kept in play by the defense (no kill or error charged) still count in the denominator, which lowers the percentage even though nothing went technically wrong on that swing.
