This calculator converts a wall length and panel width into a panel sheet count and cap rail footage.
How It Works
Enter the total wall length to cover, the wainscoting height, and the width of a single panel sheet, commonly 32 or 48 inches. The calculator converts wall length to inches and divides by panel width, rounding up to a whole panel since a wall run rarely divides evenly into panel widths. Cap rail, which finishes the top edge of the wainscoting, is calculated as the wall length plus a 10 percent allowance added for miter cuts and waste.
Formula & Methodology
By hand, convert the wall length from feet to inches first, since panel width is specified in inches, then divide by the panel width and round any remainder up to a full sheet, since a partial panel still requires buying a whole one. Cap rail is worked out separately from panel count, using the wall length directly in feet with 10 percent added on top to cover the extra length lost at mitered corner joints and the occasional bad cut.
Examples
40 ft wall, 32 in panels
At the default 40-foot wall and 32-inch panel width, wall length in inches is 480, giving a panel count of 480 divided by 32, which rounds up to 15 panels, plus cap rail of 40 times 1.1, or 44 linear feet.
60 ft wall, 48 in panels
For a longer 60-foot wall using wider 48-inch panels, wall length in inches is 720, giving 720 divided by 48, which also rounds to 15 panels, plus cap rail of 60 times 1.1, or 66 linear feet.
