About the Waste Diversion Rate

The Waste Diversion Rate Calculator turns three raw waste totals, recycled, composted, and landfilled, into a single percentage showing how much of your waste stream was diverted from landfill. It is the same metric municipalities, corporate sustainability programs, and zero-waste certifications use to track recycling and composting performance. Because the inputs accept any consistent unit, pounds or tons, it works for a single household's bin as easily as a small business's monthly waste report.

How It Works

Enter the amount recycled, the amount composted, and the amount sent to landfill, using the same unit for all three. The calculator adds recycled and composted together as the diverted portion, adds all three figures for total waste generated, and divides diverted by total to get a percentage. If nothing is entered across all three fields, it returns an error asking for at least some waste generated rather than dividing by zero.

Waste diversion rate (%) = (recycled + composted) / (recycled + composted + landfilled) x 100.

Formula & Methodology

Add your recycled and composted amounts together to get total diverted waste. Separately, add recycled, composted, and landfilled to get total waste generated. Divide diverted by total and multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage, rounded to one decimal place.
