About the Food Water Footprint

The Water Footprint of Food Calculator estimates the virtual water embedded in a typical week of eating, based on how much beef, chicken, rice, eggs, and milk you consume. Virtual water covers everything used to grow feed, raise animals, irrigate crops, and process food, not just the water that touches your plate directly. It gives a rough sense of how diet composition, particularly meat intake, drives water demand far upstream of the kitchen.

How It Works

You enter weekly amounts for five food categories: beef and chicken in pounds, rice in pounds, eggs by count, and milk in gallons. Each category has its own fixed water-per-unit figure, and the calculator multiplies each entry by its factor and sums the results into a weekly total, then multiplies by 52 for an annual estimate.

Formula & Methodology

Multiply each food's weekly quantity by its per-unit gallon figure: 1,847 gallons per pound of beef, 468 per pound of chicken, 403 per pound of rice, 53 per egg, and 880 per gallon of milk. Add the five results together for a weekly total, then multiply by 52 weeks for the annual figure. Because beef's factor is roughly four times chicken's, even modest beef consumption tends to dominate the total.

1 lb beef, 2 lb chicken, 1 lb rice, 6 eggs, and 0.5 gal milk per week, the defaults, totals 1,847 + 936 + 403 + 318 + 440 = 3,944 gallons weekly, about 205,088 gallons a year.

Lower-beef diet

Dropping beef to 0 while eating 1 lb chicken, 2 lb rice, 12 eggs, and 1 gal milk per week totals 468 + 806 + 636 + 880 = 2,790 gallons weekly, about 29% lower than the default despite eating more of everything else.
