About the Well Pump Sizing
A residential well pump needs enough capacity to keep water pressure steady when several fixtures draw at once, not just enough to meet the demand of a single running tap. This calculator estimates a starting-point pump capacity in gallons per minute from a simple count of a home's bathrooms and other water fixtures.
How It Works
Enter the number of bathrooms and the number of other water fixtures, such as a kitchen sink, laundry connection, or hose bibs. The calculator counts each bathroom as two fixture units, reflecting that a bathroom typically includes both a sink and a shower or tub, adds the other fixtures directly on top, and multiplies the combined total by 1.5 gallons per minute per fixture to estimate peak simultaneous demand. A 6 GPM floor is applied so small homes aren't given an unrealistically low recommendation, and the final number is rounded up to the nearest even GPM.
Formula & Methodology
Working through the math by hand, first double the bathroom count, since each bathroom is treated as two fixtures, then add the other fixtures count directly. Multiply that combined fixture total by 1.5 gallons per minute, the assumed draw rate per fixture when several might run together. Compare that figure against the 6 GPM floor and keep whichever is larger, then round the result up to the next even number, since residential pumps are commonly sold in even GPM increments.
Examples
2 bathrooms, 3 other fixtures
With the default 2 bathrooms and 3 other fixtures, peak fixtures equal (2 x 2) plus 3, or 7, and estimated peak demand is 7 times 1.5, or 10.5 GPM, which rounds up to a recommended 12 GPM pump.
1 bathroom, 1 other fixture
For a smaller home with 1 bathroom and 1 other fixture, peak fixtures equal (1 x 2) plus 1, or 3, giving 3 times 1.5, or 4.5 GPM. Since that falls below the 6 GPM floor, the floor takes over and the recommendation stays at 6 GPM.

- This is a fixture-count estimate only - it doesn't factor in the well's actual sustainable yield, static water level, or total dynamic head, all of which a licensed well contractor measures directly on site and which can outweigh a fixture-based estimate entirely.
