About the Standard Drinks Calculator

A drink's alcohol content depends on both how much liquid is in the glass and how strong that liquid is, which is why a small pour of a high-ABV spirit and a full glass of wine can represent roughly the same amount of alcohol despite looking very different.

How It Works

Enter a beverage's volume and ABV percentage, and the calculator converts the volume to milliliters, calculates the pure alcohol content by weight, and divides by the standard 14 grams that define one US standard drink.

Formula & Methodology

The calculation first converts the entered fluid ounces to milliliters, then multiplies by the ABV percentage to find the volume of pure ethanol in the drink. That ethanol volume is then multiplied by 0.789, ethanol's density in grams per milliliter, to convert it to a weight in grams. Finally, dividing by 14, the US definition of one standard drink's worth of pure alcohol, gives the number of standard drinks the beverage represents. This is roughly the alcohol content of a 12 oz beer at 5% ABV, a 5 oz glass of wine at 12% ABV, or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits, the three reference points the US standard drink definition is built around.
